The 700 series were manufactured by Volvo from 1982 to 1992. The assembly was handled in different places: Gothenburg, Kalmar and Uddevalla in Sweden, Ghent in Belgium, and Clayton in Australia.

The Volvo 760 was the first to be introduced in 1982, followed by the 740 two years later which was a bit cheaper.

The Volvo 780 coupé showed up in 1985 at the International Auto Show in Geneva, and was then available in Europe in 1986 and in the United States in 1987. The 780 was built and design in Turin, Italy, by Carrozzeria Bertone. Talking about the design, Bertone used the 700 series profile but with a little bit lower hood, trunk and roof lines, made C-Pillar wider and made more gradual slope down to the trunk. The designer also integrated chrome on the door handles, on the bumpers and on the side mouldings.

The first two years, the Volvo 780 was equipped with a B280F V6 engine, but then switched successively to B230FT and then B204GT during the following years of production to give more power to this 3'400 lb car (1'500 kg).

From 1986 to 1991, the car maker officially produced 8'518 Volvo 780.
