"The future is being built today". What’s the difference between a concept-car and a prototype? The first one is highly mediatized and seen as a marketing product. Its function is to impress by showing what the manufacturer can do but it will never be produced. A prototype is more discreet, sometimes even classified, it represents the step before the mass production. Honda managed to do both with one car. The Urban EV Concept, as mentioned in its name, is a concept-car unveiled for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2017 and as mentioned by Takahiro Hachigo (CEO of Honda Motor Co.) “this is not some vision of the distant future”.

Indeed, Honda has already settled the intention to make this Concept/Prototype into an everyday car for Europe by 2019 and it’s only the first step, Honda wants that two thirds of its global sales to be electrified by 2030. The batteries are the main issue for electric cars manufacturers and for this purpose, Honda is developing a very light battery that can be charged quickly (100% in 15 minutes) for a 250km ride (150 miles). I don’t know how that can be useful but they also want that the electricity from the car to be re-injected into the domestic electricity network (why?). Anyway, after Tesla, Honda is writing the future of EVs and other manufacturers should really take them as an example!

Speaking of the future, the design should always follow the technology and the Honda Urban EV Concept is a good mix of both. The pure style can be compared to Apple’s design with no unnecessary detailing, very elegant (almost like the concept Saab Aero-X available here in 1/18 scale). To continue the comparison with Apple, Honda developed a virtual assistant named “Hana” (Honda Automated Network Assistant). It’s basically a “concierge” that can give you the best itinerary, play your favourite music or pay your coffee in advance for a seamless morning commute.

The car’s lines look suspiciously volkswagenish, and many people have pointed this similarity with the Golf MK1 but they don’t know that the Golf came out 2 years after the Honda Civic MK1 which I think was an inspiration for Volkswagen so yes, the Urban EV Concept is a pure product of Honda and even a tribute to its famous city car! Want to check by yourself? Get your Urban EV in 1/18th scale from DNA Collectibles here, you’ll be able to have a closer look. Of course, it’s an exclusivity that you’ll find anywhere else but in our shop.
